The family that runs this small restaurant lives in the same building, and the general composition reflects this symbiosis: the shop is located in the flat horizontal volume of the first floor while the housing area is located in the vertical one, in two floors. The intersection between these volumes contains the living room and kitchen, which can be used both in the private and the public realm.

The traditional typology of a 4-slope roof and gallery, brought to Uruguay by Britain railroad companies, is reformulated in this house. Two of these archetypical modules are joined and rotated 90 degrees. One module contains the living room and the kitchen in the front, while towards the back the other module contains the private areas (dormitories and bathroom). The relation with exterior spaces is generated by a front gallery and a wide side opening. Here, the dinning area can be moved to the exterior, generating a simple and comfortable relation with the outside.

The construction of this small cabin pursued two objectives: first, the provision of a site office for the development of our professional activities in the beaches of Maldonado; and second, insight into the possibilities of low-cost construction using traditional technologies. The house contains a rich variety of spatial situations built using simple design resources.

The house stands on the sand dunes of the beach, occupying a singular and privileged spot with excellent views to the sea. An austere image is acquired by using local materials and techniques, helping the house to merge into the surrounding environment. The project has two compositional directions: Daily activities take place along the axis generated by the direction of the seashore, while holiday-related activities are arranged down an axis angled 135 degrees to the previous one. Inside the house the kitchen is the semantic hinge of those directions, where leisure time and everyday duties meet.
